Over Calf
What is the cost of raising a calf?
My dad has this great idea of raising a beef calf over the winter to try to subsidize our food costs for the upcoming year. What I would like to know is “Is it really worth it?” We already have a barn, and plenty of pasture space (Not that it helps much in the winter) so those costs are covered, but what about feed, bedding, vet care, things like that, not to mention the sheer cost of having the animal butchered when the time comes.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
At first it is going to seem that you are spending alot of money of the animal, but in the end it will be worth it! THey really dont need to much, but you gotta feed them hay and grain! During the summer it is a little cheaper, because they can be out in the pasture more! Your dad has the right idea to raise a calf, it will be cheaper if you think bout it. Just think your parents dont have to buy meat from the grocery store, they can have all kinds of different styles of meats made from it too. We(my parents)raise beef along with our dairy cows, we sell the meat and also keep some for herself! It also depends on how old the calf is, if it younger you gotta becareful with problems.
